Cristiano Ronaldo’s inability to return to full form and fitness is the cause of Real Madrid’s current problems, according to former manager Fabio Capello.
Real Madrid have been plagued by unimpressive results lately, drawing four matches in all competitions. Ronaldo himself has only managed to find the back of the net just once in four La Liga games where he has appeared after being sidelined as a result of an injury sustained at the UEFA Euro. The knee injury sustained by the star player has restricted him to being able to play only six times for Real this season. While speaking on Ondo Cero, a Spanish radio station, Capello said that Ronaldo’s not been physically well, as Real Madrid’s best player was responsible for Real’s result woes.
It is Capello’s belief that the form of the Portugal soccer team’s skipper is having a directly negative effect on the team as a result of his slow recovery from injury. A consequence of Ronaldo being Real Madrid’s top player is that his current condition resulting in his inability to be on the pitch is affecting Real’s performances, and his fight to recover to get back to full fitness is the reason for Real’s dip in form recently.
At present, in Real’s current streak of poor form, Ronaldo has netted only once, against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League. Zinedine Zidane’s team have not recorded a victory in a game, ever since they equalled Barcelona’s record of winning streak in 16 La Liga games with a triumph over Espanyol last month.
For a very long time, even when Real had a poor performance, the team have been able to depend on the three-time Ballon d’Or winner to perform some miracle. Since he transferred to Real from Manchester United 7 years ago, only once has he netted less than 31 goals in a La Liga season, and this was during his debut season during which he bagged 26 goals.
In spite of the presence of star strikers in the squad, Cristiano Ronaldo is still a strong component, and when he fails to deliver, Real Madrid will feel the adverse effect on their score sheet and position on the table.
According to Capello, he believes that when Ronaldo is able to make a return to full form and fitness, Los Blancos will experience a turnaround in their fortunes. It is also a widely held belief in many quarters by followers of the game, that the former England manager has made a correct assertion and his prediction is accurate that when Ronaldo starts to bag the goals consistently again, Real will see the positive effect on their results.
Presently, Real sit in second place behind rivals Atletico Madrid in the Primera Division on goal difference. They sure are earnestly hoping that Ronaldo can catapult the team back to triumph at Real Betis when the two teams face each other on the 15th of October. However, with each season that passes, the Portuguese superstar moves towards the end of his career and subsequent retirement, so Real Madrid must gear up for that time when his inability to be in form will be beyond just a temporary situation.
